Mulberry Beach, Tocumwal
Swimming Hole Heaven in Victoria

Also referred to as Pebbly Beach because of the little square pebbles along the shore, Mulberry Beach is a smaller beach in the bush on the Victorian side of the river. When I say pebbles, they are large bits of gravel in a narrow line, about the size of a small dice. Even though this is a smaller beach, it is still around 150 metres long and stretches about 30 metres back from the water at its widest point.
So there is plenty of room to set up on the shore, with campers usually taking up the spots at the back of the beach along the tree line. Getting here was relatively easy, with the bush tracks in reasonably good condition on flat ground after the initial descent down from the highway. Best for a swim in the morning on chilly days, and in the late afternoon when you want a bit of shade, this spot was quite peaceful when I visited in the off-peak season.
It was a pleasant spot to sit in the water, looking across to the Tocumwal town foreshore and the high levee bank that helps to protect the town from flooding. There is however a boat ramp on the opposite bank, so watch out for passing boat traffic, and if it gets too busy, head to one of the other beaches further upstream or downstream. Other Information Before You Go:
Location: Mulberry Beach, accessible from an unnamed track off the Goulburn Valley Hwy, 300 metres south of the bridge across the River Murray at Tocumwal, on the Victorian side of the river, 270 km (approx. 3 hr drive) north of the Melbourne CBD
Latitude:-35.814929 Longitude:145.563326
Getting there: From the Goulburn Valley Highway (A39) head east along the unnamed track 300 metres south of the bridge across the river at Tocumwal. After 100 metres along this track, head due east along the middle track, which will take you through to Mulberry Beach after 400 metres, where you will probably see some campers. The access road was dirt, but suitable for 2WD vehicles on my visit, but might not be suitable for 2WD vehicles after wet weather or local flooding.
