Perth's Warmest Pools
Perth, Western Australia

Where is Perth's warmest pool for swimming? Which is the warmest pool near you? Below is a list of indoor public swimming pool temperatures across Perth. I also ended up including two special outdoor pools too, and you will soon see why.
Perth's Warmest Public Pool:
The winner of the title of warmest public pool in Perth actually ended up going to an outdoor pool - the hydrotherapy pool at Bicton Pool. The pool is heated to a toasty 35-36 degrees using geothermal energy from an underground bore. It is about the size of a backyard pool but it is reasonably deep at up to 1.5 metres, so big enough to move around in if there are no others in the pool.
There are now several pools in Perth utilising geothermal energy to heat the water, including for hydrotherapy. The main pool at Bicton is also outdoors and is geothermally heated as well, but only to around 27 degrees because it is used for competition water polo. Anyone who has played water polo knows that when a pool is too hot you usually end up fainting or throwing up from overheating if you are playing to win, so I am glad they have not overheated this one.

Perth's Warmest Indoor Pool:
The warmest indoor swimming pools in Perth are heated to 34-34.5 degrees and include the hydrotherapy pools at Aqua Jetty, Aqualife Centre, Bayswater Waves, Cockburn ARC and Riverton Leisureplex. Access to these pools is generally not included in the swimming entry price. Some of these hydrotherapy pools restrict use to those aged 16+ years only unless you have a medical certificate. Public access can also be restricted to certain hours of the day, so make sure you check ahead with the pool operators to get the latest access information. These pools can be a very attractive swimming/bathing/defrosting option for very cold days, either in their own right, or before/after lap swimming. I have only included pools in which you can actually swim (as opposed to just bathing). This excludes spas, toddler pools and shallow leisure pools. This list also includes some outdoor pools that are geothermally heated and open to the public all year round.

Perth's Warmest Lap Pool:
Perth's warmest lap pool is shared by the 25 metre pool at Beatty Park Leisure Centre and the 20 metre pool at The Swim School WA's Merriwa pool both of which are operated at a cosy 32 degrees. The Merriwa pool is primarily for swimming lessons.
It only opens to the public at restricted times on weekdays and is only a few lanes across, so make sure you check the lap swimming page for opening times and/or give them a call before you go. The Beatty Park Leisure Centre also has an indoor leisure pool and three outdoor pools, so there are a few more options there if it gets crowded.

The water temperatures for lap pools in the table below applies only to those indoor public pools that have a minimum length of 25 metres or, if it was the longest indoor pool at the venue (and hence designated for lap swimming), a minimum length of 20 metres. This list also includes some outdoor pools that are geothermally heated and open to the public all year round.

If you are planning to visit these pools, beware of clashes with classes, particularly after school swimming lessons. Some hydrotherapy pools are also booked by health care providers. If you are not sure when a pool is free, check out the pool timetables on the venue's website or ring ahead to save yourself the disappointment. Many of these pools also have ramps and hoists for the elderly or disabled. Entry times at Bicton Pool are restricted to morning weekdays and a short window on Saturday afternoon.

To put the temperatures below in context, the water in San Francisco Bay (considered too cold for potential escapees from Alcatraz to swim in) is 12-16 degrees and the water at Perth's beaches ranges from 19 degrees in winter to 23 degrees in summer.
Your internal body temperature is around 37 degrees. Most hot spas in public pools are 36 degrees or above.
Comments:
Here are a few comments that I have received on the warm water pools in Perth:

"The Aqua jetty in Warnbro is a wonderful place. All pools are heated but hydrotherapy pool you mention is not included in general admission. There are public hours you can pay $11 adult entry for a small window of times throughout the day. Best to check. Thank you for all the other info." - Jo from Rockingham, 23/5/2021.

"You have missed Mandurah pool which is brilliant temperature and Pinjarra which is much colder" - Rose from Perth, 25/3/2019.

My note: Thanks for this advice Rose. These two pools are south of the metro area boundary that I was working from, which is why I have not put them on the list to date, but I am glad that you have pointed out the temperature difference at these two pools for other swimmers.

"I have been going to Wanneroo Aquamotion for a number of years now. In fact I have just come from there. The warm water program pool is now used primarily as a child's learn to swim pool. The few times set aside for hydrotherapy are usually fully booked." - Nicole from Wanneroo, 25/5/2015.

My note: I checked with the venue and they confirmed that you have to book 2 weeks in advance to access the program pool in the few time slots available, which is impractical for most swimmers.

If you think I have missed a public swimming pool that should be on this list, please fill in the comment box below. I am also interested in your experiences after visiting, and any changes in swimming conditions. All fields are required if you would like to see your comments appear on this website.
