Mitchell Ave Splash Park
Wangaratta, Victoria

You take the high ground and I’ll take the low ground in this fully fenced, multi-level splash park with hills, tunnels, and a ferocious tipping bucket. With water features available at every level, including well positioned, elevated water cannons, there are plenty of wet areas to climb over and crawl through. This splash park in suburban Wangaratta has several different types of water features, but one in particular grabbed my attention as being quite unique. Ordinarily you would expect that you could take refuge from the water jets in the 5-10 metre long tunnels that run underneath the two hills, giving you a chance to catch your breath without getting squirted, in the shadows away from the main action.
But no. Whoever designed this splash park wanted it to splash everywhere, so they have actually installed little water jets inside the tunnels that periodically turn on and off. If they are off when you go into the tunnels and then suddenly turn on, it can take you by surprise in this small enclosed space. There are a bunch of other water features, including a series of brightly coloured ring jets, a splash pad with thin elliptical fountains, an overhead dragonfly sprinkler, a hand pump into cascading trays, the giant tipping bucket, and the water cannons.
There are two separate activation buttons on waist high poles within the splash park, each of which operates a separate part of the splash park. So it is possible to play around on the splash pad, for example, without activating the tipping bucket. To activate both areas of the splash park at once, just press both of the buttons separately. The splash park is located within a broader linear park alongside One Mile Creek, which also includes a fenced dog off-lead area, a basketball court, a dry playground, a toilet block, and some exercise equipment. There is roadside parking right in front of the splash park.
