Riverwalk Splash Park, Werribee
Splash parks in Melbourne, Australia

Land developers have built a large splash park to help attract new home buyers to the Riverwalk development in Werribee. It's a great addition to the traditional park that sits alongside it in this hot and dry part of Melbourne's fringe. The splash park is open to everyone for free and includes lots of great features including push button water cannons, water jets and sprinklers of various sizes, rain clouds and a range of hand operated pumps, collectors and diverters. There is also a smaller rock garden near the north-west entrance to the park that incorporates around a dozen water jets on a splash pad that you can also walk through. This splash park is best suited to pre-schoolers and above who are able to walk, because the surface can be a bit harsh on toddlers' crawling kneecaps and because the sudden regular but unexpected start of the sprinklers and water jets from the park surface can tend to frighten them.
Children who can walk will love climbing over the troughs and trays, dancing through the sprinklers and walking through the steel bamboo poles.

To activate the water jets you can use the hand sensors located around the splash park. See below for a photo of one. It is actually the button in the middle that you need to press, but kids who are tall enough can simply press their whole hand onto the sensor. There are several signs advising users not to drink the water coming from the play equipment, although the reasons for this and potential health risks were not outlined on the signs. To be safe, make sure you take the time to explain to your child not to drink this water.
If anyone wants a drink, there are several drinking water fountains, including one right next to the splash park.

The broader park, known as Riverwalk Village Centre Park, is small but packs a lot in. It includes a playground, a village green, some skate ramps, a basketball court and a small wetland. There are barbecues and sheltered picnic tables if you want to have a picnic there.
