Bar Beach (South) Swimming Enclosure
Wagonga Inlet, Narooma, New South Wales

Swim long laps in the netted swimming enclosure in Narooma at Bar Beach (South). Right next to the heads at Wagonga Inlet, this enclosure is protected from the surf by the breakwater that runs along one side, with just enough swell to remind you that this is an ocean swim. It gets deep surprisingly quickly, so expect to do plenty of swimming and not much standing on your way out to the end of the net, just under 100 metres away. Whilst plenty of people congregate in the first few metres of shallow water near the beach, there is relatively little swimming traffic beyond this, even on hot days.
Swimming out to the end of the net with a snorkelling mask, I was fascinated by the many fish that seemed to be making it their home. There are seals resting on the breakwater, but I wasn't lucky enough to see any in the water. The visibility in the water was exceptional, and I was able to clearly see the net resting on the sandy ocean floor.
Above the water, from the end of the pool there are great views out through the heads, as well as back to the beach and the surrounding mountains. When you are ready to head back to shore, take a quick breather on the padded buoys that hold the net floating in place, before heading off.

Here is a video of swimming in the enclosure, including an underwater exploration of the aquatic life in and around the net.
